Questions to ask your massage therapist

Just like any member of your health team, having good rapport with your massage therapist will lead you on the path towards physical liberation. Our bodies have gone through their fair share of challenges in our lifetimes and all need care that is appropriate to us as individuals. Deep tissue can free a person from years of physical tension and frustration, while another may get even greater relief from a myofascial therapy session.

Consistently working with your massage therapist you trust and who understands your body, on a schedule that fits your lifestyle, will help you feel stronger and more balanced in daily life. Having a knowledgeable and emotionally intelligent  massage therapist is a huge asset and luxury.

Listed below are some questions you can ask your massage therapist(s) to get to know them better. This will also help them understand your needs more, as this shows that you are dedicated to taking charge of your life to decrease pain and stress and live in a more balanced way. Healing happens when both parties actively participate.

  • WILL THIS HURT?

Depending on what type of pain you are experiencing, a massage typically doesn’t cause any pain. You will most likely feel pressure, which for some people may be uncomfortable. But, not painful. If you feel uncomfortable, just let them know so they can adjust their pressure and/or technique.

  • IS IT NORMAL TO HAVE A HEADACHE AFTER A MASSAGE?

Yes, headaches can arise after a massage. The massage can stimulate vascular circulation, which can cause a headache. Headaches can also be caused by laying in the headrest for too long, so it’s important to tell your therapist if the headrest is too high or low. If you’re feeling congested, lay your head to the side to breathe easier. Be sure to hydrate properly before and after your massages.

  • WHAT IF I’M TICKLISH?

Let your massage therapist know beforehand. They will know how to work around it and if you don’t realize that you are ticklish until you start to receive your massage, just let them know so that they can change their technique. For example if your feet are ticklish, instead of asking the massage therapist to skip them, let them know and maybe broader pressure would help you receive the care your feet need.

  • WHY DO I HAVE BRUISING FROM THE MASSAGE?

After you’ve received your massage, you may see some bruising 2-3 days after. This is typical and it’s nothing to worry about. Some people just bruise easier than others. But, if you are uncomfortable with the amount of pressure during your massage, just let the therapist know.

  • CAN I SLEEP DURING THE MASSAGE?

Of course! Some people can’t help but fall asleep. A massage is very relaxing and sleeping is a natural response.

  • CAN I REQUEST A SILENT MASSAGE?

You can absolutely request a silent massage. Some people enjoy silence during their massage. Being able to relax and let someone else handle the work for you with only the calming background music will not only feel good, but it gives your nervous system a chance to relax.

Ask whatever questions you feel you need answers to. They will all contribute towards your success in relieving stress and tension and maintaining balance in your life.
